Trumpeter/composer Sean Jones is SF Performances’ current Jazz Artist-in-Residence and the newest member of the all star SFJAZZ Collective. Originally a drummer, he discovered jazz and the trumpet at ten years old upon hearing Miles Davis—specifically Kind of Blue and Amandla.
Jones has crafted a geo-targeted San Francisco program with “At the Black Hawk.” Backed by some of the Bay Area’s best jazz musicians—including Marcus Shelby and the talented young Oakland Future Trio, students at the Oakland School of the Arts who have worked with SF Performances resident artists like Vijay Iyer from their middle school years—Jones will recreate a legendary live recording by Miles Davis at the Black Hawk, a storied San Francisco jazz club that was once on the corner of Turk and Hyde Streets just a few blocks from the Strand Theater.
